Life & Work with Ngwane Liz of Texas

Hi Ngwane, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
founded an everyday ethical handmade luxury brand called Margo’s mode named after my late mother. Margo’s mode is aimed at cultural preservation and environmental We promote the idea of ‘slow fashion’ through our ethics and aim to contribute to the circular economy. Fabrics are locally sourced from our suppliers and of limited quantities. All garments are handmade to order in limited quantities, working with small communities like artists to hand paint stories and markers Sustainability is also at the heart and forefront of our ethos, we assess its multidimensional process, we aim to continually assess the importance of integrating environmental and social considerations into our work processes. With this we founded an environmental charity organization No Waste Factory .The No Waste Factory is an Environmental charity with mission to prevent and transformed textile waste to catalyse a circular economy and reduce fashion’s water, chemical and carbon footprints. Our program is aimed to change mindsets and practices to stop creation of textile waste now and in the future, as well as creating systems and partnerships that generates and showcase values in existing waste. Through working with our local communities, designers and consumers #nowastefactory supports and promotes sustainable development Goal ;1 (No Poverty); Goal 12 (Responsible Production and Consumption); Goal 14(life below water

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Finances starting a fashion business in a country like Cameroon
Working with artists to hand paint this stories is never easy for them to buy the idea
Promoting sustainability meaning preachings over consumption and production can be challenging
Marketing our pieces to a global market

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
It start my conceptualizing the design ,sketching out then go for fabric search ,some days the fabric inspires the design other days from what I thought of, the pattern of my clothes are mostly drafted by me and sworn by in-house seamstress , from there it’s mostly hand painted so we send to the artist and I have to narrate the story I which to tell , or send for traditional hand marking by mothers from north west Cameroon I eventually tell them same symbols to use, and after production our marketing team set it for photo shoot sessions.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Believe in your craft. Be intentional.
